Dear member of ORBEL,
It is with great pleasure that we invite you to the ORBEL 2022 award session, during which the best master thesis in Operational Research of 2021 will be chosen!
This on-line session takes place on Friday February 11 between 13h30 and 15h30.
The award session will take place in MS Teams.  In case you wish to attend, please send an e-mail to [email protected] to receive an Outlook invitation with the Teams link.
Before announcing the winner, the work is presented by the three shortlisted candidates in 30 minutes each (including questions), namely:
Joren ‘s Jongers, “Rostering use case bij Kinderziekenhuis,” KU Leuven, promotors P. De Causmaecker and W. Meert
Inneke Van Hoeck, “Network simplex method for periodic scheduling problems,” U Antwerp, promotor W. Vanroose
Kato Van Parys, “Dynamic route selection for emergency evacuation from inside disasters,” U Ghent, promotor D. Goossens
The entire event will take place in English.
The Award
Every year, ORBEL, the Belgian Operational Research society, organizes a student competition funded by OMP. The ORBEL Award (worth €1500) is given to the author(s) of a scientifically oriented thesis (no PhD thesis!). The criteria for judgement are based on the efficiency and effectivity of the scientific approach applied to solve the problem under study. The author(s) should put emphasis on the application of existing methods in new areas or on the application of new solution methods for models recognized as useful for solving real-life management problems. One of the criteria will be, therefore, the actual collaboration with industry during the thesis elaboration. The paper can be written in Dutch, French or English. It will be assessed by a jury mainly taking into account the effectiveness of the theoretical methods to solve practical problems.
The Jury
Many thanks to the members of the jury for agreeing to cast their judgement on the theses:
Roel Leus (president of the jury)
Joachim Arts
Gerrit Janssens
Stef Lemmens
Célia Paquay.
