A fully funded position for a PhD student in Sustainable urban supply chain operations

The KU Leuven Institute for Mobility, ANT/OR (Kenneth Sörensen) and Hasselt University (An Caris and Kris Braekers), are looking for new PhD students. We have a vacancy for multiple fully funded doctoral student for four years. This PhD research is part of a practically oriented research project together with KU Leuven, Hasselt University, University of Antwerp, VIL, four cities and ten supply chain companies. The research topic is situated in the scientific domain of operations research (operational research (OR), “besliskunde”, operations management, distribution logistics).

Position:

  • a four year fully funded doctoral research position at KU Leuven or UHasselt or Antwerp University;
  • (80%) scientific research in the field of operations research;
  • (20%) educational tasks: seminars, workshops, thesis coaching, etc.;
  • attending conferences, visiting international partners, etc.

Topic:                   Operations Research for sustainable urban supply chains

Supported by VLAIO and together with VIL, we start a project called “STRAUSS: SusTainable collaboRAtive Urban Supply chainS - The future of urban supply chain orchestration” with multiple PhD students in three universities. The projects aims to explicitly integrate the sustainability and livability perspective of the cities with the economic and sustainability perspective of supply chain companies. The new PhD student will join this project and focus on HoReCa deliveries, waste flows, grocery deliveries and/or flows related to construction sites in cities.

Profile

The candidate should have a master’s degree in engineering, business engineering, computer science, informatics or applied mathematics and have an interest in practical applications of quantitative or mathematical techniques and operations research. Basic programming skills are required (at least). Speaking Dutch is recommended and he/she should be able to write (and teach) in English. 

You will become part of a dynamic international research group with other PhD students, all working on applying operations research on (closely) related practical problems. Within the project, you will collaborate with different companies and PhD students from the other universities involved in this project.
