  • Using computer simulation to test a short stay unit

    Abstract:
A creative solution for managing the patient's flow consists in directing them based on their predicted length of stay. If a patient is thought to stay a short time, he will be directed to a specific unit, specialized in short stays. This new system implies 2 major changes. Firstly, it means a revision of the process in use in order to dedicate a specific unit to short-term stays. With more efficient and standardized processes, a short stay unit would be able to deal with the same number of patients in weekdays time as in a complete week. Secondly, it implies a long-term unit in charge of more severe cases and for potential transfers from one unit to the other if needed. The aim of this paper consists in studying the feasibility of this new organizational system by using a computer simulation model. It has been conducted in three surgical departments (gynecology, urology and ophthalmology), which are located in 2 adjacent units. This simulation study has been carried at the Saint-Luc Hospital of Bruxelles, using patient data collected in 2011.
